Introduction

This cheat sheet will help you implement Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA) in your organization. Zero Trust means "never trust, always verify" - you don't trust anyone or anything by default, even if they're inside your network.

2. All Communication is Secured Regardless of Network Location

Every connection must be encrypted and authenticated, whether it's between your office and the cloud, between internal systems, or from home to work. Network location doesn't determine trust level. Use strong encryption (TLS 1.3 or better) for everything.

3. Access to Resources is Granted on a Per-Session Basis

Don't give permanent access to anything. Each time someone tries to access a resource, evaluate whether they should be allowed. Sessions should be short-lived and require re-authentication when they expire. No "set it and forget it" access.

4. Access is Determined by Dynamic Policy

Access decisions consider multiple factors: who's asking, what device they're using, where they're connecting from, what time it is, and how they normally behave. These policies change based on risk. Someone accessing payroll during work hours from their work laptop is low risk. The same person downloading lots of data at 2 AM from a coffee shop is high risk.

5. Monitor and Measure the Security Posture of All Assets

Continuously check the health and security of all devices and systems. If you can't see it, you can't protect it. This includes monitoring for patches, antivirus status, configuration changes, and suspicious behavior. Assets that fall out of compliance lose access.

6. All Authentication and Authorization is Dynamic and Strictly Enforced

Security decisions happen in real-time for every access request. Don't rely on static rules or permanent permissions. The system should automatically adjust access based on current risk levels, revoke access for compromised accounts, and isolate suspicious devices.

7. Collect Information to Improve Security Posture

Gather as much security data as possible about users, devices, network traffic, and system behavior. Use this information to detect threats, improve policies, and make better security decisions. This data is essential for compliance and incident investigation.

Core Zero Trust Architecture Components

Zero Trust uses three main parts that work together:

Policy Engine - This makes decisions about whether to allow or block access. It looks at user identity, device health, location, behavior, and risk scores. The tricky part is making policies that are secure but don't make work impossible.

Automate responses - Build tools that can automatically isolate compromised accounts, quarantine suspicious devices, and update security policies based on new threats. The goal is to respond faster than humans can.

Use your data - Take all the security data you're collecting and use it to improve your policies. This phase is about fine-tuning rather than building new stuff.

Phase 4: Keep Getting Better (Ongoing)

Zero Trust is never done:

Stay current - Update threat intelligence, adjust risk scoring, and change policies based on new attack methods. What worked last year might not work now.

Plan ahead - Start thinking about post-quantum cryptography, new authentication methods, and AI-powered security tools.

Measure what matters - Track how fast you detect threats, how fast you respond, how many policy violations happen, and whether users are happy. Use this data to keep improving.

Legacy System Challenges

Legacy systems present some of the biggest challenges in Zero Trust implementations, and they're often where attackers focus their efforts because these systems are harder to secure.

Weak authentication is probably the most common issue. Many older systems only support basic username/password authentication with no option for multi-factor authentication. Some were built when passwords were considered sufficient, and adding modern authentication requires significant modification or replacement. This creates a security gap where your most sensitive systems often have the weakest authentication.

Network dependencies are another major problem. Older systems were designed for flat, trusted networks where everything inside the perimeter was considered safe. You can't apply Zero Trust principles directly to these systems, but you can control how they communicate with everything else. Monitor all traffic to and from these zones and require modern authentication for any access to the zone itself.

Protocol translation helps when you have systems that use old authentication methods but can't be modified. Translation gateways can convert modern authentication tokens (like SAML or OAuth) to whatever format the legacy system expects (like Kerberos or basic auth), bridging the gap between old and new security approaches.

Enhanced monitoring becomes critical for systems that can't log properly on their own. Use network-based detection tools to monitor traffic patterns, connection attempts, and data flows for systems that don't provide detailed security logs. This won't give you the same visibility as modern applications, but it's better than having no monitoring at all.
